Association(s): ARAV

8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Description: This workshop will provide participants with practical basic and intermediate techniques used for handling, restraint, physical examinations, anesthesia, sexing, and obtaining common laboratory samples in reptile patients. It is hoped that by completing this lab attendees will be more comfortable and competent in using these techniques to successfully incorporate reptile patients into their practice.

The lecture will include a brief equipment overview, coelioscopy (laparoscopy), visceral biopsy, and endoscope-assisted ovariectomy, and will be followed with hands-on practical endoscopy using non-recovery sliders. Attendees will complete a pre-femoral coelioscopic examination, visceral biopsies, and in females, endoscope-assisted bilateral ovariectomy. Previous endoscopy experience is not essential, but registrants should review chelonian anatomy prior to the lab.

Application of Evidenced-Based Medicine in Herptile Practice

Instructor(s): Dr. Paul Gibbons and Dr. James F.X. Wellehan

Association(s): ARAV

1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Description: We live in an Age of Information. Today's veterinarian has access to more information than anyone could ever hope to master, with more generated each day. These massive heaps of data do contain pearls of knowledge that will change the way we practice, but finding them can seem daunting. Participants in this wetlab will discover how to efficiently search for, appraise, and apply the best-available evidence in everyday herpetological practice.
